DS9: Why Were 531,000 Documents in Dataset 9 Released Last?

Dataset 9 (DS9) is the largest single release from the DOJ’s EFTA collection — over 531,000 documents. It was also one of the last datasets released, which raises interesting questions about its contents.

What’s in DS9?

DS9 contains a massive volume of financial records, internal communications, and operational documents. Notably:

  • Financial transaction records spanning multiple years and jurisdictions
  • Internal memos between Epstein’s legal team and financial advisors
  • Property management documents for the USVI properties
  • Communications that were previously withheld under various privilege claims

The Deletion Question

Perhaps most notably, several documents from DS9 were subsequently removed from the DOJ’s EFTA portal. Our integrity monitoring system has tracked these deletions. Were they routine corrections, or something more?

Key Questions for the Community

  1. Has anyone found documents in DS9 that contradict earlier released materials? Cross-referencing with DS1-DS8 could reveal inconsistencies.

  2. What financial patterns emerge from the DS9 transaction records? The sheer volume makes manual review difficult — what tools are people using?

  3. Why were certain DS9 documents deleted after initial release? If you’ve cached or downloaded copies before deletion, those could be valuable.

Just a minor note: DS9 is actually currently missing from the buttons in the “Source” section. There is one unmarked button, maybe the category is missing from its name.

Good catch @J4Vic – the DS9 source filter button has been fixed. It was showing as an unmarked button because the label mapping was missing for the efta-ds9 source identifier in the database.

What was fixed:

  • DS9 now shows as “DOJ Data Set 9” in the Source filter on the documents page
  • 7 other source filter buttons that were showing blank labels have also been corrected
  • 3 category filter buttons with missing labels were fixed too
  • All Data Set filters (DS1-DS12) now sort in proper numeric order instead of alphabetical

Additionally, you can now search for any EFTA document by its ID directly – type EFTA01249597 (or any ID) in the search bar or command palette and it will do an instant direct lookup.

Thanks for reporting this!
